A Big Blow From Climate Change!

Posted by Ryan Reyes On November - 2 - 2009 2 COMMENTS

climatechangecartoon“CHANGE IS WHAT WE NEED”, the words Barack Obama used as his platform in the midst of US presidential campaign. But climate change is not the change the world needs.

Have you noticed the severe heat these past few months? And then, unexpectedly, rain will fall down angrily to your house’s roof or worse, soak you all over your body! Now, we are being tormented by consecutive tropical depressions (alongside with people’s depression for the rainy days) and just the past few weeks, we are ravaged by the consecutive storms!

Global warming does not do anything beneficial to everyone. Scientists debate whether the issue is manmade or a natural phenomenon. Whatever it is, it’s still harmful and definitely not cool.

Rivers are dead. The air is impure. Soil is degraded. Unpredictable is the new word to define weather forecasting. The news speaks for themselves. And we cannot evade the fact that we are the ones who contributed great in the worldwide weather abnormality. What’s the risk?

Nations all over the world suffers big blow because of climate change. Deserts in the Middle east and Africa experienced floods, yes, floods! What else it can be? Other countries witnessed typhoons, cyclones, hurricanes and anything ‘bout weather matters took hundreds of lives or even thousands! They are threatened by hailstones and whirlwinds that ravaged their living.

I should have come out of other title than the one I have posted since I would like to insert other topics particular to the human’s avaricious exploitations of Mother Earth. Pollution. Nonrenewable energy. Mining. Yes, mining and deforestation. Nature has sacrificed a lot and now people have to suffer.

Fresh news did not make our morning bright like the extreme flooding and landslide tragedies bury more than thousands of lives and houses while many are still missing. You’ll see how rain can tumble down a hill weakened by continuous mining thus making a rush of boulders and mud to engulf houses and lives. Such will make one to reminisce tragic events like the Ginsaugon Leyte and Ormoc disaster. Yes, people’s wrongdoings were blamed but the rain helps, right? It can be a product of climate change which is again pinpoints its finger to human, the guilty race.

I still remember our mobilization camp one from now. I remember how we endured the mud in our feet and hours of being soaked under the rain carrying dampened bags, one cannot even think why I did not caught cold when I came home. It’s all because of unpredictable weather as what they have reasoned out. At least there’s no landslide occurred and those who participated the program are still alive and kicking.

It’s sad that none of the leading countries would want to sacrifice its economy for the sake of the Earth’s standing. Movements of scattered environmental groups are not enough to help our ailing Mother Earth. A slogan will sell if it contains this message: “GLOBAL WARMING: The Earth’s Warning.”

The Earth has finally gets her revenge against us. She’s here first even millions of years before us.

“As I take a walk nearby the riverside, the river itself is dead; I see lights flickering from the gargantuan skyscrapers besides the noticeable foggy ambience. Oh, how I wish I could see stars in a bright velvet sky instead?”

ERAP in 2010 Elections

Posted by Roxie Adricula On October - 27 - 2009 1 COMMENT

estradaThe moment has come. It just all started with a statement of considering himself running if the opposition fails to unite behind a sole candidate. But making his political comeback, Former President Joseph “Erap” Estrada announced his presidential bid at a huge rally in Tondo, Manila last Oct. 21. With his teammate Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay and his senatorial slate led by Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile, they carry the government for the poor.

Estrada represents the United Opposition, a coalition of two influential parties that have been critical of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s rule. Binay is UNO’s chairman. Before he even makes his way to Election Day, Estrada faces a series of hurdles to hop in.First is legal question of reelection ban, if he can run for the presidential post. It is indeed a justiciable issue high courts can pay attention. The Constitution says, “The President shall not be eligible for any reelection. No person who has succeeded as President and has served as such for more than four years shall be qualified for election to the same office at any time.”

Many legal scholars arrive in a conclusion that the bare words “any reelection” should be understood obviously: elected presidents can never ever run again for the same post. They are also trying to make sure that the framers of the Constitution clearly voted for a perpetual reelection ban for all those who had been elected as president. But, saying he is backed up by a legal study and the call of people for him to run, Erap seems to look for another way saying his “unfinished term” and not being the incumbent will exempt him.
Next is the obscurity of the presidential clemency given to Erap. The pardon was absolute and unconditional erasing both the principal penalty of imprisonment and the penalty of electoral disqualification. The pardon did not contain any clear burdens and instead, it clearly “restored his civil and political rights.”

Lastly, history is his bitter enemy. He is the first president to be impeached in 2000. He was arrested in 2001 and convicted of two counts of well-documented plunder in 2007. it was his so called “enemy” who then pardoned him almost immediately after. His presidential powers were abused by Erap with corruption scandals and debauchery of his administration

He still claims to be the champion of the masses. What he did not know is that his “masa appeal” wont work again. It seems like masa politics or the rich versus poor theme is not the name of the game in 2010 but of reform and reestablishing a clean government for the people. Maybe Erap is running because he wants to rewrite and correct the past. Erap had his chance and he blew it.
