Mild quakes hit Visayas, Mindanao
MANILA, Philippines—Two mild earthquakes shook the Visayas and Mindanao regions Thursday.
According to the United States Geological Survey, a magnitude 4.8 quake struck off General Santos City at 5:28 a.m. The quake had a depth of 4.9 kilometers and was estimated at 165 kilometers east southeast of General Santos City.
The area has been seismically active since last weekend, with four mild quakes recorded last Sunday and another last Tuesday.
At 12:18 p.m., the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology recorded a magnitude 3.6 quake 17 kilometers east of Ormoc City. It had a depth of one kilometer and was felt at Intensity 2 in Ormoc City.
No aftershocks or damage as a result of the quake were recorded.
The country lies in a region known as the Pacific Ring of Fire that is characterized by a high rate of volcanic and seismic activity.
