Speak of Sweet Words

Posted by Ryan Reyes On November - 7 - 2009

mouthHave you been angry today? Have you yelled at someone so loud? If so, what did you feel? Did you feel that you should not have said or done that? When we open our mouth without thinking and hurt someone, we always feel regret at the end.

“The heart of the righteous studies how to answer, but the mouth of the wicked pours forth evil.” – Proverbs 15:28

But, it is true that we may find it hard to think clear before saying such words when we are enraged or full of emotions. When we try to let loose of what we are keeping inside, we always end up hurting others.

King Solomon is not different from up. Even though he is the author of the book Ecclesiastes, he complained “Therefore I hated life because the work that was done under the sun was distressing to me, for all is vanity and grasping for the wind. Vanity of vanities, all is vanity.” (Ecclesiastes 2:17, 12:8). But at the end of the book, he said “The Preacher sought to find acceptable words; and what was written was upright—words of truth.”(Ecclesiastes 12:10)

It is clear that Solomon knew that he must control his emotions where he always asks himself first.

“He who has knowledge spares his words, and a man of understanding is of a calm spirit.” –  Proverbs 17:27

Before anger overcome you, it is better to always put in mind for you will utter such words. We must find the right words to say and also try to understand other’s feeling.

“Pleasant words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the bones.” – Proverbs 16:24

The most important of all, if we do not have the intention to hurt others when we are about to talk, we must bear in mind “The heart of the wise teaches his mouth, and adds learning to his lips.”(Proverbs 16:23). Of course, we are not perfect and we really find it difficult to find clarity before anything else. But with the help of God’s word, we can learn how to think first and to consider the feelings of others before saying anything else.
